Thought of by many of our visitors as the jewel in the Compton Acres crown, the Japanese Garden sparkles most brightly in Spring – and we will be celebrating this special time with Japanese Month throughout April.
Perhaps the finest month in the horticultural calendar, this is a time of awakening for our Japanese garden, regarded as one of the finest in the country. After its winter’s rest, it will be bursting into life with vibrancy and colour; from the Tea House draped with Japanese wisteria, to the spectacular Kurume Hybrid azaleas, Japanese cherries and maples along with Hakon grass and other native plants, all exemplifying the elegance of traditional Japanese horticulture. It is well worth a visit – or two!
To mark this special event, as well as the garden’s centenary in 2020, our plant centre will be curating a month of Japanese plants, stone garden features, Japanese tools and special items to help our customers add a Japanese flavour to their own gardens.
On sale will be a selection of Acers, azaleas, rhododendrons, Wisteria, tree peonies, grasses and bamboos to name just a few. Our plants’ team will be on hand to help with selection and advice.
Garden Ornaments such as stone lanterns will be available, along with temple features based on ornaments from our own Japanese Garden, along with top-quality Oriental wind chimes, temple chimes, Buddhist chimes and gongs. Specialist Niwaki tools and topiary plants will also be on show, as well as bonsai.
Also not to be missed in April is our special weekend of centenary celebrations. Expect 1920s-themed fun across Compton Acres from Friday, April 17th to Monday, April 20 when our plant centre will be adorned with Japanese decoration and horticultural history whilst Compton Acres, and its staff, will be dressed in the 1920s style.
