A Chance to Say Thank you
We were really honoured to welcome a group of veterans to Compton Acres on the Friday before Remembrance Sunday for a tour of our Gardens followed by one of our delicious cream teas. This was just a small gesture of thanks to show our appreciation of their courage and selfless service. The Veterans were all from the Dorset branch of SSAFA, formerly known as the Soldiers, Sailors, Airmen and Families Association. SSAFA provides lifelong support to serving men and women and veterans from the British Armed Forces and their families: the Dorset branch provides advice and support as well as practical help covering a range of social, family and financial issues.
Even in the uncertain weather, the Gardens were still looking glorious. Our Gardens are designed to have horticultural interest all year round and the Autumn colours are particularly stunning this year. Our Veterans really enjoyed the beautiful surroundings and took a few moments just to sit peacefully and soak in the view. Fortunately, the stormy weather held off before they were literally ‘soaking’ in the view!
Following the Garden tour, they took refuge in our award-winning Café and Tearooms where we served them with our lovely cream teas – all handmade scones, homemade jam, and scrumptious Dorset clotted cream. The perfect antidote to wet and windy weather!
We had such a delightful time with them. They thanked us so warmly for our hospitality when it was we who were trying to thank them! On this 100th anniversary of the end of WW1, a tour of the Gardens and a Cream Tea was the very least we could do.
