About Compton Acres

Constructed in 1920, Compton Acres is now recognised as one of the most important ornamental gardens in England.

The 10-acre garden was created on Dorset heathland after Thomas Simpson purchased the site, including the mansion, and began developing a series of themed gardens inspired by his overseas travels, working alongside Head Gardener Mr Middleton.

The gardens opened to the public shortly before the Second World War and reopened after the war. In 1950, Mr Simpson sold the site to London architect J. Stanley Beard, who restored the gardens and reopened them to the public in 1953.

After several changes of ownership, Mr and Mrs Merna purchased Compton Acres in 2003.

Compton Acres Today

Since 2003, Compton Acres has seen extensive development and restoration, including the addition of the Ticket Office Gift Shop, Café and Tea Rooms, Plant Centre, Gifted Moments, The Italian Pantry and the award-winning Italian Villa.

The gardens have been refurbished to a high horticultural standard, with many thousands of new plants introduced to enrich seasonal interest and visitor experience. Today, Compton Acres includes five main themed gardens linked through a connected layout, with further planting areas including a subtropical section, a Southern Hemisphere collection and a hosta walk.
